Why Buhari’s ministerial list may not be released anytime soon

The Senate, on Thursday, June 25, announced a one-month adjournment, following the controversial election of Ali Ndume as Senate Leader, yet again, against the wishes of the All Progressives Congress.

The adjournment means that the cabinet list of the President, even when ready, cannot be screened by the Senate till it reconvenes on July 21.

The constitution of the country mandates the senate to sit and screen the nominees for the President’s cabinet.

Although Saraki is constitutionally empowered to reconvene the senate at anytime to carry out the screening, but it is widely believed that there has been a total communication breakdown between Buhari and the senate president since the shoddy inauguration of the National Assembly on June 9.

An APC Senator revealed to TheCable that: “The likelihood of reconvening the senate during the month-long break is there, but Buhari is so irked by Saraki’s leadership that it will take a miracle for him to call Saraki and request that the senate be reconvened to consider his ministerial list.”

Buhari, was said to have hoped that after losing out in the Senate Presidency, the party’s anointed candidate, Ahmad Lawan, would at least emerge house leader.

However, that was not to be, as Lawan was not supported by his fellow senators from the North-eEast, who instead opted for the pro-Saraki Ali Ndume.

The report further stated that President Buhari was about to start working with the senate leadership through a proxy, which would have been Lawan.

“This would have allowed Buhari to be dealing directly with Lawan rather than Saraki. All matters from presidency to the senate would have been channelled through Lawan, thereby eliminating the awkward situation in which Buhari would be sitting in the same room with Saraki,” a presidential source revealed to TheCable.
