The Abia state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Friday, vowed that it would rather die than see Uche Ogah become governor of the state.

The party stated this after its emergency meeting at Umuahia, the state capital.

According to the chairman of the PDP in the state, Johnson Onuigbo, democracy is about to be raped and they will do everything possible to resist it.

He noted that they have gotten wind that the state was about to be flooded with military officials.

Ogah, who came second in the PDP governorship primary for the state, was yesterday issued with a certificate of return by the independent National Electoral Commission after a federal high court ordered that he should replace the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

Onuigbo said, “Abia is not safe. I didn’t want to believe the rumour that the state will soon be invaded by the army because this is not a war zone.”

“We want to inform the world that there is tension in Abia because democracy is about to be raped.”

“As a party, we will resist any move by anybody to undermine the peace in the state.”

He said that the state was peaceful and that Ikpeazu has obtained an exparte injunction “restraining the state Chief Judge or any other judges from swearing in Mr. Ogah as governor”.

“We are ready for them, we are ready to die,” he said, adding that, “If they do it, then they are inviting anarchy and confusion in the state.”

“We are in a democracy so we want the world to hear and know that we are being shortchanged in Abia.”

The PDP Abia chairman further said that the party has reached out to Ogah, asking him to allow peace in the state but Ogah turned them down.

He said the party would sanction Ogah whenever the current crisis ends.
