The annual Rhythm Unplugged held on the 26th December 2010 at the Expo Centre of the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. It lived up to the brand quote, ‘Anything can happen’, from the choral backup of Banky W to the fact that the show started and ended on time – uncharacteristically early given the concept of ‘Nigerian Time’.
Within four short hours, the show featured a diverse range performances, reminding guests that Rhythm Unplugged was indeed the most anticipated show of the season.
Notable performances included X-Factor alumnus Tiwa Savage, who was in perfect synergy with her band. Banky W brought up a fully attired choral back up to sing his ‘Lagos Party’ hit. Naeto-C’s performance, and his suave outfit reminded all that he is Nigeria’s most stylish male musician. The crowd enjoyed Sound Sultan’s performance so much that he had to be driven off the stage by host, IK’s voice. Timaya ended his performance with the comical announcement that he is now nice “since 9ice is not nice anymore”. Terry G, the master of free madness, infected the crowd with a dose of his madness with his ‘Ginjah Swagger’ dance.
And Yes, Tuface performed. Oh Tuface! He had the longest and the best received performance of the night. While performing his ‘Only Me’, he cleared the air about rumours that he wrote the song for Mikel Obi. Tuface insisted the song was just a product of his imagination and was not directed at anybody. He closed his show with a bang, reminding Nigerians that 2011 was an election year, so Nigerians should Register Select Vote and Protect (RSVP).
Comedian Basket mouth naturally stole the night with yet another amazing performance. His protégé, Righteous Pastor, also moved the audience with his short but enthralling performance.
Just as midnight struck, IK announced the end of the show which led grumbling – many thought it was another of the organisers’ ‘Anything can happen’ stunts. The show ended with the ‘loudest ovation’ when M.I was invited for the final performance.
