A seven-year-old girl, Theresa James has been confirmed dead.

She died in a Friday morning flood, following a heavy downpour on the Anguwar Yelwa Community in the Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.

The flood followed over 15 hours of rain fall, which started at about 11pm on Thursday night when many of the residents had gone to bed, and was said to have been caused by a collapsed bridge that blocked the water channels.

The rain fall which started on Wednesday, August 21, with intermittent breaks, became heavier on Thursday and started wrecking havoc when it collapsed the damaged bridge and in the process blocked the water channel that allows for easy flow of water between Anguwar Barde and Yelwa communities.

The seven year old girl was said to have been killed while she was asleep as she could not hear the sound. Her parents were said to have gone for a vigil when the incident occurred.

A resident of the area, Solomon Daye, 17, told newsmen that they were fast asleep when suddenly they discovered water was rushing into their home.

“Before we could jump up the whole place was flooded and within a twinkle of an eye the water got to my shoulders.

“There was a neighbor of mine who went to a night vigil and left her four children at home.

“Three of the children slept on the bed while the other one slept on the floor and since they’re little children and were unable to escape the flood.

“In the morning when the rain subsided, we discovered that the flood raised the three children who were on the bed while James who was sleeping on the floor died as she could not escape.

“When concerned residents arrived to rescue the children, they didn’t even know there were four of them in the house, it was when the water subsided and they went to arrange the room that they found the body of the girl,” he said.
