The Film Blog: We’ll be watching EbonyLife’s Fifty tonight

Fifty isn’t a perfect movie. No gainsaying there.

But in the annals of Nigerian movie history, its story will be told. Executive Producer Mo Abudu’s commitment to presenting the world with a different image of Africa is no better encapsulated by the film, which tells the story of four Nigerian women in, or about to enter their fifties.

And given that the movie went on to gross just shy of 100 million naira in cinemas (with an estimated further 300 million from other platforms) we imagine it’s not a stretch to say it was a crowd pleaser, despite whatever problems we think it might have had.

It comes on tonight, at 9pm on EbonyLife TV, and we’ll be watching (again). We think you should too. Although it’s a fairly risque movie, so maybe not quite perfect family viewing.

We hear there’s a TV series adaptation, which picks up where the movie left off, so if nothing else, at least we get to fully refresh our memories before that arrives.
