Tobi Bakre & Maurice Sam return to the small screen with ‘Lara Of Lagos’

Tobi Bakre

Long time no see Maurice Sam. The actor who made his name in Nollywood bringing to life characters on shows like EbonyLife’s “On The Real” and Multichoice’s “Hustle” is back on the small screens again, this time to take on a millennial romantic comedy. Lara Of Lagos is the new show that he will be premiering on alongside former Big Brother Naija alumnus and now Nollywood best supporting actor, Tobi Bakre.

So what exactly is Lara Of Lagos?

For one, we are excited to see yet another web show with a female protagonist. Several  of the previous shows with a similar set up have proven largely disappointing because of the shallow writing and the obvious misogyny that tends to permeate all aspects of the writing on the show. Maybe Lara of Lagos will finally break that jinx. The show introduces us to two relatively new faces, Teniola Aladese and Bukola Oladipupo, who are the show’s female leads and functional friendship. Lotanna Okoli directs the series and calls in the big guns to help out, because we noticed film-maker extraordinaire Ifeoma Chukwuogo make a cameo in the show’s teaser.

Lara of Lagos is also taking another gamble by employing the Netflix model and releasing all twelve episodes of the first season on the same day at the same time straight to Youtube. That means they are convinced the show is good and that the audience that is drawn to it will want to bingewatch the entire thing. This kind of confidence is what we need more of in the industry. From the trailer, there’s quite a bit of raunch, relationship friction seems to also be a significant part of the show’s premise, as well as the glorification of the hustle. Can’t help but wonder what the big cliff hanger moment will be when the show premieres in full on the 14th of July.

Check out the teaser here.
