NLC says Tinubu’s approval of the ₦62,000 minimum wage proposal will determine its next action
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has aired its opinion concerning the last minimum wage proposal and the president’s silence on the issue since it was submitted to him.
With the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting today, the President might likely approve of the minimum wage before taking it to the National Assembly, and the NLC has stated that it would not embark on an immediate strike. Still, the approval of the minimum wage bill will determine its next course of action.
So far, two minimum wage proposals are standing, which are the ₦62,000 offered by the federal government and the ₦250,000 provided by the Organised Labour.
Southern governors emphasise their demand for state police
Southern governors have emphasised their stance on creating state police, stating that their need will give them much control over security within their states.
A meeting of the Southern Governors Forum (SGF) was held yesterday in Abeokuta, which demanded the attendance of all the southern governors in Nigeria, except the Rivers State governor, who was absent at the meeting.
The southern governors believe that creating and enforcing their locals as state police will be much more effective as these people would understand their language and terrain better.
ASUU informs FG to resolve ten outstanding requests
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called upon the federal government to resolve ten pressing demands in the 2020 Memorandum of Action.
In the letter signed by Prof Emmanuel Osodeke and directed to the President of Nigeria, ASUU claimed that it had no choice but to embark on a nationwide strike in February 2022 when all its requests for the federal government to resolve its demands were ignored.
“Your Excellency is requested to set the necessary machinery in motion for bringing ASUU and major stakeholders (Ministries, Departments, and Agencies) together to address the outstanding issues in FGN/ASUU engagements since 2009. This will save our university system the agonies of another round of industrial action and its disruptive potential,” he said in the letter.
Tinubu encourages the North to combat insurgency together
The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the northern leaders of Nigeria to unite and fight insurgency that plagues their geopolitical zone.
The President reminded them that he appointed northerners into significant defence positions, which should allow them the power to combat the insurgency.
“Our first decision was to task our brothers from the Northwest and the Northeast to rise in defence of the security of the region… who else can better understand the complexity of the region than the people themselves,’’ he said.
World Bank collaborates with FG in renovating Kwara’s Asa Dam
The World Bank has announced its partnership with the Nigerian federal government to renovate the defunct Asa Dam in Kwara State to provide quality water for the state’s residents.
The Asa Dam Project is expected to be executed by a tripartite partnership, which has agreed to go about the challenges of agriculture, water resources, and land reclamation, all caused by the ecological factors in Kwara State.
