VIO ban: El-Rufai led the way by banning FRSC from Kaduna roads

Are we going back to the time when Regions chased one another to ensure that development was assured?

This is a referral to the ban of traffic officers from the road in order that congestion is reduced or eliminated.

Sometime in February, the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, stunned residents of Kaduna State and indeed the whole of Nigeria, when he asked the officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to leave the Kaduna Metropolis and urban centres.

His reason was based on the ‘nuisance and menace’ they were causing and, while some Nigerians condemned the decision, some others commended the governor.

Let’s examine the fact that he didn’t wake up from the government house to make such a decision. He had consulted with the State’s Security Council; which he chaired and looking at the daily influx of complaints from motorists, they made the decision.

This is quite similar to the issue the Lagos State Government claim to have been facing from the Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), “apart from this, complaints about the overzealousness of some VIO men have reached a high level”, the Lagos governor said.

The only difference is, while El-Rufai totally bans the FRSC, Ambode asks VIO to go retrain.

This is an issue that should have been long addressed and we must say El-Rufai has led the way ‘in the right direction’. We would not want to disagree with the above statement considering the personal experiences that people share everyday.

Now that Ambode has followed suit, honour must be given to Governor El-Rufai for taking the bull by the horn and for showing Ambode the way to go.
