Before his foray into politics, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce positioned himself as the poster boy of new things in Nigerian politics. His common sense mantra echoed the sentiments of some Nigerians who saw his approach to issues in the polity as different from the norm of regular politicians.
Popularly called the common sense senator or the Twitter senator, Murray-Bruce who represents Bayelsa East in the red chamber is perceived as one who busies himself with tweets than with actually effecting any sort of change in the Senate.
In the week under review, Murray-Bruce made a gaffe on his Twitter page, saying, “Except you are my Constituent, It is silly for anyone to have a problem with the Senate’s salaries and come to me. Go to YOUR own Senator!”
Inasmuch as Bruce is the representative of the people of Bayelsa East, he is also a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who has previously said he will make details of his salary known. Bruce’s backtracking and approach to this issue by directing Nigerians to their respective Senators is as silly as the tweet. His condescending manner is disrespectful and may just be proof that he is someone who does not walk the talk.
Senator Dino Melaye is not one to shy away from controversy. Currently embattled in a fight for survival for his seat following the recall process he is facing, Melaye took time out to pepper Nigerians with his fleet of exotic cars. In a series of posts on his Instagram page, showing off his wheels, the Kogi West senator, wrote, “My Toys. My passion Noni! Talk oya talk”.
