Why EFCC released Thisday Publisher, Nduka Obaigbena

The Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Thisday Newspapers, Nduka Obaigbena was on Wednesday evening, granted administrative bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Obaigbena was reported to have voluntarily surrendered to the anti-graft commission on Tuesday, after being invited to explain his role in the ongoing investigation into the alleged arms funds diversion scandal.

He was interrogated by the EFCC’s Special Task Force investigating arms procurement scam under the former administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

He is alleged to have received N670m from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

The funds received by Obaigbena are believed to be part of the diverted $2.1 billion meant for the procurement of arms to prosecute the war against insurgency.

Punch Newspapers reports that Obaigbena was released by the EFCC after he purportedly signed an undertaking that he would return the money he collected from Dasuki within the next two weeks.

A source was said to have revealed that the Thisday Publisher allegedly used part of the money he received from Dasuki to fund his United Kingdom-based television station, Arise TV.

N568, 360, 000 was alleged to have been transferred to Arise Global Media Limited, the promoters of Arise TV.

“There is so far no established trail of funds moving from General Hydrocarbon’s account to the NPAN account which should have confirmed the claim by Nduka Obaigbena that he received money from the ONSA for onward delivery to NPAN members,” the source was quoted to have said.
