[The Sexuality Blog] A woman just got jailed for 10 years for fabricating 9 violent rapes

Before we delve into this, we would like to remind you that false rape claims make up for less than 8% of all rape claims and as such is not an ‘epidemic’ or a ‘significant’ phenomenon. However we understand that even that number is far too high and is often used as justification to delegitimise the very real trauma that actual rape victims suffer. So we at the Sexuality Blog vehemently discourage fake rape claims for whatever reason. We also advocate for strong disciplinary measures against anyone found to have made false rape claims, which is what happened to 25-year-old British woman Jemma Beale.

Beale was convicted recently of four counts of perjury after it was discovered she had fabricated four incidences of sexual assault and nine violent rapes, all of which she claimed happened over the course of three years. Because of her false claims, a man Mahad Cassim was convicted of rape, put on the British sex offenders list and sentenced to seven years in jail, as well as investigations against several other men. As a result of Jemma Beale’s actions, a cumulative 64,000 hours and £350,000 was spent investigating and prosecuting her and her victims. Mr. Cassim got his sentenced overturned and his record expunged and Beale was rightfully convicted, but the consequences of her actions have already caused serious damage to the credibility of other rape victims.

But even more, because of Ms. Beale, prosecutors in the British legal systems are predicting that a lot of convicted rapists will appeal their convictions inspired by Beale’s case, and a good number of them will win. False rape claims when they do occur, really hurt everyone.
