Yoruba leaders threaten to secede from Nigeria over Fulani herdsmen

The abduction of Yoruba leader and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Olu Falae, by Fulani herdsmen and the recent invasion on his farmland has forced Yoruba leaders to threaten secession from Nigeria.

On Thursday, prominent leaders of the South-West held an emergency summit in Ibadan, Oyo state, where they insisted on reassessing the status of the Yoruba in the Nigerian state.

The summit was tagged: ‘National Insecurity and the Menace of Fulani Herdsmen in Yorubaland’.

At the meeting, which was presided over by former Governor of the Western Region, General Adeyinka Adebayo- the leaders warned that the Yoruba can no longer live with the present structure of Nigeria, which undermines self actualization of the people of the South West.

Factional leaders of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Dr Fredrick Faseun and Otunba Gani Adams, who were also present at the meeting, said it was high time the Yoruba earned its sovereignty.

While condemning the “invasion and killing of people in Yoruba territories” by the Fulani herdsmen, the summit released a communiqué at the end of the meetings.

It said in part: “If we do not see any step in this direction within a reasonable time, the Yoruba may reconsider their place in a union that cannot protect them and would not allow them to protect themselves and use all legitimate and peaceful means to attain self-determination.”
