The Zamfara governor has explained his statement, but what he “actually meant” is even more stupid

Governor Abdulaziz Yari was wrong the first time. Let’s assume he was ignorant and maybe he’s not into health stuff so he has no idea what and why Cerebrospinal Meningitis is.

His state, Zamfara is the worst hit in the country accounting for over 200 deaths out of the over 300 recorded. So maybe he’s panicked and being a religious man, the only thing that comes to mind for him is the sin of fornication and the wrath of God that attends such. He even said, “People have turned away from God and he has promised that ‘if you do anyhow, you see anyhow’ that is just the cause of this outbreak as far as I am concerned.” As far as he knows, this plague from heaven has no cure and this is just the end for all of us.

But as soon as his words got out, the Federal Government immediately released a statement correcting Gov. Yari’s gaffe. It partly read:  “The federal government does not have views of that nature‎ and I am not sure the state government can really continue to make that statement…Nature played us an unfortunate stroke but that is not to say we committed sin or anything. It does happen that things occur out of the blues“. Not everything but at least it helped dispel fears that the gods had visited us with the wages of our sins.

The Common Sense advocate, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce sent a riposte too, “Meningitis is caused by bacteria not sin. If sin caused meningitis, most of us politicians will get it, but it’s the poor who suffer it most,”

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II wisdom-personified also put the Governor on blast, and he backed it up with Islamic tenets.  He tweeted: “Meningitis as punishment for fornication has absolutely no basis in Islam. It is science not religion. Treat meningitis, don’t say God is punishing victims. It is science not religion. The statement by Governor of Zamfara Abdulaziz Yari on God punishing Nigeria with Meningitis is Islamically incorrect.

Apparently, Governor Yari was misguided and we had hoped he’d either take all the corrections and come back with an apology or just shut up and find solutions to curb the outbreak.

BUT NO!

He came back with a more nonsensical statement. Like stupider than what he said at first. This time, he said he was misinterpreted the first time and what he “actually” meant was that all diseases come from Allah and Nigerians need to move closer to him since he has the antidote to every disease. His statement reads: “No doubt, as a God-fearing man, and a Muslim, the governor believes in the powers of Allah to inflict whatever punishment He decides on the human race“. No Mr Governor, you shouldn’t have.  God is not responsible for the avoidable deaths of over 300 Nigerians. He is not wicked.

The governor’s insistence that this disease has no cure is even more heart-wrenching as he is supposed to be the man the citizens look up to for hope and succor in these hard times but rather than give that, he has succeeded in spreading fear. Rather than educate himself on the diseases, its causes and prevention measures, the governor has maintained the same pig-ignorant stance for days and is even now basking in his own crassness.

At this point, we hope Governor Yari will collaborate with the Federal Government to prevent the spread of the disease and effectively manage the situation. When that is done, we can discuss how to get the governor schooled on diseases, science, religion and everything else in between so he’ll stop being the subject of ridicule.
