#100DaysOfTrump: “Obama wiretapped my phones”, and other scandals of the Trump administration

by Dolapo Adelana

On November 9, 2016, history was made as Donald J. Trump, a man who had no prior political experience defeated an experienced politician, Hillary Clinton to emerge the president-elect of the world’s most powerful nation.

From the moment media outlets in the US announced Trump winner of a keenly contested election, speculations arose that his presidency will be one tumultuous ride. The speculations were not only because Trump had no political experience, but also that he was a very blunt and vocal person, who did not know how to be “politically correct” like normal politicians.

Not known to be someone who will back down from a part, Trump during the campaign made promises – building a wall at the Mexican border, tightening immigration laws, making Americans his utmost priority and keeping jobs within the citizens of the country – which he was hellbent on fulfilling.

Here’s a list of scandals in Trump’s first 100 days.

Obama wiretapped my phones – Donald Trump

On March 4, Trump took to his favourite communication means, Twitter, to cry blue murder that his predecessor had wiretapped his phones at the Trump Towers before the election victory.

Trump’s claim was dimissed by Obama through his aides. A spokesman for the former president, said, “neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any US citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.”

Not satisfied with the rebuttal from the Obama camp, Trump insisted that his phones were tapped, just days after the White House softened on his claims.

VP Mike Pence refused to comment when asked to speak on his principal’s wiretap claims.

Following Trump’s claim, the US Congress launched an investigation inviting Director of the Federal Bureau Intelligence (FBI), James Comey to appear before it.

During the hearing on March 20, Comey said he had no information to support Trump’s claim as he shutdown the allegations.

Democrats demand Jeff Sessions resignation for committing perjury over links with Russia

On March 02, top Democrats called for the resignation of Attorney-General, Jeff Sessions after it was discovered that he lied about meeting with Russian officials during the election campaign at Senate confirmation hearing.

“I have not met with any Russians at any time to discuss any political campaign, and those remarks are unbelievable to me and are false. And I don’t have anything else to say about that.,” Sessions told Senators during the hearing.

But while speaking with NBC News, Sessions denied any wrongdoing, saying, “I have said whenever it’s appropriate, I will recuse myself. There’s no doubt about that.”

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer demanded Trump’s resignation saying the Departmet of Justice must be above reproach. Nancy Pelosi, a top Democrat Congresswoman also supported Schumer’s position.

On his part, Trump who shared a picture of Schumer with Russian President Vladmir Putin labelled the senator “a hypocrite” calling for his investigation.

Defending Sessions, Trump described his Attorney-General as “an honest man” who had done nothing wrong.

NSA, Michael Flynn forced to resign over Russia ties

On February 14, National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn resigned from Trump’s cabinet. His resignation followed allegations that he misled Vice President Mike Pence over his discussions with Russian envoy, Sergei Kislyak.

A week after Flynn’s resignation, Trump appointed Lt. Gen. HR McMaster as his replacement.

On Thursday, the US Congresss launched a fresh probe into Flynn’s ties with Russia.

Recall that Flynn offered to tell his story before the House Intelligence Committee in exchange for immunity, an offer the committee rejected.

As President Trump marks 100 days today there his no guarantee if he administration we stay clear of scandals going forward. We watch.
