24 years a slave! True story of a Nigerian slave in Britain

Here is another tragedy-filled potential Oscar winning story.

A British couple accused of detaining a Nigerian immigrant as a slave for over twenty years has been found guilty.

Emmanuel and Antan Edet aged 61 and 58 respectively were found guilty of slavery by a London court after being accused of forcing the immigrant to work without pay and threatening him with deportation if he tried to escape.

The couple held their victim captive since he arrived in Britain at age 14, the prosecution declared.

They had promised the teenager when they brought him from Nigeria in 1989 that they would pay him for his services and also sponsor his education.

But contrary to their promise, he was forced to clean, cook, garden and also care for the couple’s children for up to 17 hours a day without pay.

He was also forced to eat lonely by himself and provided with no sleeping gear, leaving him to sleep on hallway floors.

He is 40 years old now.

The slave-master couple were convicted at Harrow Crown Court in northwest London on charges of child cruelty, slavery and assisting in illegal immigration as the victim was represented by the Crown Prosecution Service, Damaris Lakin.

Very disheartening is the revelation that the teenager, now grown into a man in the last two decades, has had very limited contact with his family and the outside world as the couple seized his passport.

Another tragic story of humanity’s failure!
