3 things a new Manchester United deal for David de Gea imply

by Mark Bassey

According to reports in the British press Wednesday morning, Manchester United are set to complete talks over a new deal, for their number one goalkeeper, David de Gea.

If the 24-year-old gets to sign a new contract, what does this imply?

1. Real Madrid would have to pay big

It was looking like a done deal, that De Gea would be returning to Spain this summer. Real Madrid have been circling around the goalkeeper for a while now and the rumour mills insisted they were keen to secure him as replacement for Iker Casillas. If indeed they still hold an interest, it means United will be in a great position to demand a hefty transfer fee.

2. United are sending out a strong message

In the words of famous United goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel, “It’s very important the club’s best players sign new contracts to send a signal. It shows that they believe in the Manchester United project and believe the club will go back not only to the top of the Premier League but also European football.

“If De Gea signs a new deal it would be a very big signal and I’m sure everyone who loves the club would love that. Fingers crossed he will sign another five-year contract.”

3. The EPL will still have one of the best

The Spaniard is possibly the best stopper in the Premier League right now. He has been single-handedly responsible for some of the points Louis van Gaal’s team has picked. Almost every week, the former Atletico Madrid keeper pulls off one sensational save or the another. If he ends up staying, we can get to savour his brilliance for more seasons.
