The Lagos State government on August 03, 2017, arraigned 42 individuals before a magistrate court on a one-count charge bordering on homosexuality. They were 28 Adults and 12 minors.
The alleged homosexuals were arrested at Vintage Hotel, No. 999 Ikorodu Road, Owode Onirin, Lagos, the previous day following a tip off by residents living in the area about the activities of the suspected homosexuals.
However, there is more to this issue than just arresting the alleged homosexuals. The Nigeria Police Force is yet to come clean on what exactly led to their arrest – were they actually at a gay party or were they participants at an HIV/AIDS screening and talk. It is also in the public glare that the Police are of the habit of expressing overzealousness in labelling people.
It’s actually ludicrous to believe that all these 42 individuals are homosexuals. There are still doubts as to the number of rooms in the hotel. How many individuals lodged in a room? Were they caught in the act or are they just victims of speculation by the Police?
Not long ago the police recently arrested some Badoo suspects. Over 100 persons were picked up and close to 80% of them have been released. Their images have been tarnished as they were paraded before the press.
If investigation later shows these alleged ‘homosexuals’ committed no offence, how does the police intend to pay for the damages done?
Till then we will keep tracking this.
