African School of Governance (ASG) Appoints Professor Kingsley Moghalu as Inaugural President to Lead Transformation of African Leadership

The African School of Governance Foundation (ASGF) has announced the appointment of Professor Kingsley Moghalu as the inaugural President of the African School of Governance (ASG), a transformative Pan-African graduate institution dedicated to advancing public policy education, research, and leadership development across the continent.

Co-founded by H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, ASG is positioned to address Africa’s complex governance challenges by fostering the development of purpose-driven leaders equipped with world-class skills and knowledge. This landmark initiative is supported by the Mastercard Foundation and strategic partners such as the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore.

Professor Moghalu brings a wealth of expertise to the role, having held prominent positions in international policymaking institutions and academia. A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and a globally recognised scholar, he has taught at leading institutions, including Harvard University, Oxford University, and The Fletcher School at Tufts University.

According to the foundation, his extensive experience, coupled with his thought leadership on African development, positions him as an ideal leader to spearhead ASG’s mission – to nurture leaders to drive Africa’s sustainable development by providing innovative public policy education, cutting-edge research, and a platform for policy engagement that fosters transformative governance tailored to the continent’s unique values and opportunities.

Reflecting on his new role, Professor Moghalu said, “I am honoured to lead this groundbreaking institution. The establishment of ASG is a powerful expression of the founders’ vision for a transformed Africa driven by capable leadership and sustainable governance. I look forward to advancing this mission by developing Africa’s next generation of leaders.”

Makhtar Diop, Managing Director of the IFC and Chair of ASG’s Board, said:

“We are excited to welcome Kingsley Moghalu as President of the African School of

Governance. His sterling track record of leadership in international and national policymaking institutions, academia, and his thought leadership influence will help make ASG a transformative graduate school and develop a new generation of purpose-driven leaders with the skills and mindsets to help Africa address the challenges of the 21st Century.”

ASG is dedicated to equipping emerging leaders with the mindsets and skills needed to drive sustainable governance across the continent. It will offer programs such as the Master of Public Administration (MPA), Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA), and tailored executive courses to meet the diverse needs of leaders at all stages of their careers. Grounded in African realities and informed by global best practices, ASG is poised to become a key institution for nurturing Africa’s future leadership.

In addition to its educational offerings, ASG will play a critical role in advancing governance through its dedicated research centres. These include the Centre for Home-Grown Innovations in Policy and Governance, the Centre for African History and Leadership, the Centre for Trade and Regional Integration, and the Centre for Technology and Effective Delivery, which will focus on generating evidence-based solutions tailored to African governance challenges.
