The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has ditched the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the major opposition party, All Progressives Congress, APC.
Tambuwal made the formal announcement of his defection on Tuesday, 28 October, during a plenary session of the lower chamber of the National Assembly.
After announcing his defection, Tambuwal adjourned sitting of the House of Representatives till 3 December.
For the past few months, there has been widespread speculations of the Speaker’s intention, owing to his body language, which confused party chieftains on both divide.
Last week, his leaning was partially confirmed, after he attended a meeting of the APC in Sokoto State, stating that the state governor, Aliyu Wammako, had invited him for the meeting.
Tambuwal is believed to be interested in contesting for the governorship of Sokoto State.
