Amnesty International absent at FG panel on human rights violation

Amnesty International on Monday shunned the Presidential Panel of Investigation into the Armed Forces Compliance with Human Rights Obligations and Rules of Engagement in Rivers.

Background:

  • Amnesty International had accused the army of violating human rights of citizens, especially agitators like IPOB.
  • It also accused the army of extra-judicial killings, giving examples of Shi’ites and its members.
  • It alleged that the army buried the remains of victims of its alleged human rights abuse in a mass grave.
  • The Federal Government then constituted a panel to investigate the allegations against the army.

What is happening:

At the hearing on Monday, no representative of Amnesty International was present.

Chairman of the panel, Justice Biobele Georgewill, confirmed the invitation of the international anti-human rights violation body to appear before the panel at its sitting in Maiduguri.

He said they were also informed about the sitting in Port Harcourt.

Georgewill said, “Since the commencement of this panel both in Abuja and Maiduguri, Amnesty International has not appeared before the panel. Fair hearing is an opportunity being made available for every person to be heard.

“If Amnesty International does not come, the panel will proceed with hearing. The Amnesty  International is a critical part of this commission. This is the time they need to come and defend all their allegations against the Nigerian Army.”

“Amnesty International wrote a letter to the panel that they would appear at the Lagos sitting. If they don’t come at the end, it should be taken that they will no longer complain,” he added.
