Arms deal probe: EFCC to quiz 16 military officers, others this week

Not less than 16 military officers are expected to be interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission during the course of the week, as the anti-graft agency intensifies the investigations into $2.1bn arms scandal.

Some of the top military chiefs to be questioned, include- the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh (retd.) and a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal MD Umar (retd.).

Several high profile interrogations would take place during the week as invitations to appear before the EFCC, are already being sent out to the affected military officers.

Punch Newspapers reports that a former Director of Production and the Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal O. T. Oguntoyinbo would also be questioned.

The EFCC would also investigate more military personnel recommended for probe by a presidential panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari, to look into the procurement of arms.

A source in the EFCC, was quoted to have said: “The commission will begin the second batch of interrogation of military officers this week. A former Chief of Defence staff, Badeh, and an-ex Chief of Air Staff, Umar, will appear before the commission this week.”

Meanwhile the EFCC is also expected to invite two sons of a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, for interrogation in connection to the ongoing probe into the diversion of arms funds.

It was widely reported on Saturday that the EFCChas traced the transfer of N4.75bn from the Central Bank of Nigeria Imprest Account of the National Security Adviser to Silva Mcnamara, a company which has the two sons of Obanikoro, on its board.

Gbolahan and Babajide Obanikoro may be sent invitations to appear before the EFCC before the end of the week, to explain their role in the saga.
