Blood transfusion: “It is better she dies…” – Jehovah’s Witness parents adamant as police officer dies

by Rachel Ogbu

Grace Timothy, a police corporal, assigned to the Wuse Zone 3 Police Division in Abuja, died on Monday January 7, at the National Hospital after rejecting blood transfusion.

Timothy who was a member of the Jehovah witness, died because her family refused to consent to her having a blood transfusion, a belief that continues to be very controversial when faced in a life and death situation.

According to agency reports, her husband, Emmanuel Timothy, lost her pregnancy at seven months, which resulted in a surgery to get the baby out. After the surgery she had complications.

“When she complained of serious stomach ache, we rushed her to the National Hospital where the doctor said her stomach had to be flushed.

“But, before the flushing, they said she needed blood transfusion because she had already lost such much blood.

“However, she did not get the blood transfusion because her religion and family forbid blood transfusion,” Timothy said.

Now Emmanuel is considering pressing charges against the parents of his late wife.

“I have to press charges because they prevented my wife from receiving blood transfusion.

“Over our dead body. It is better she dies than for her to take another person’s blood,” they said to me.

He has since reported the situation surrounding wife’s death to the police.

  1. This story is not in accordance with modern medical ethics the girl is an adult even married she has the right to decide for herself under that conditionm

  2. after marriage, what right does parents have over a girl again?

  3. This story is not possible. If there was any malpractise performed, I'm sure they'll end up in prison.

  4. The actions of the medical staff isn't consistent with modern medical ethics. She is an adult and her concerns should have come first. The only way the staff should have even been allowed to forgo the transfusion is the patient herself made that decision herself. Irrespective of whatever the family may or may not have wanted, the decision should have ultimately been hers.

  6. Christians are warned in the Bible to abstain from blood( not to accept blood in any form and blood transfusion is bad). Accepting blood will means breaking Gods Law. Being obedient to JEHOVAH's law involve a matter of life and death. See Ɣ☺ΰ‎‎ in Gods kingdom my beloved sister. May JEHOVAH bless ur decision.
