Buhari: The choreography of the seven dancers

by Alexander O. Onukwue

The Guardian newspaper’s account of the visit of the seven Governors to President Buhari feels like the description of scenes from a movie about the CIA.

The story, led by Tunde Oyedoyin from London, is a dramatic description of the process of the Governors’ arrivals and welcome into Abuja House, and the cautious and conscious arrangements made for them to rehearse the words they were going to say to the President.

In his over 80-day stay in London, various news agencies have made efforts to get a glimpse into the possible state of the President but not a lot has been reported in terms of concrete facts. But in an investigative approach, the Guardian appears to have got some shavings that could give ideas that could help the imaginations of Nigerians as regards the health status of the President.

Pictures of the visit of the Governors have circulated through the media space, giving the impression of a hale and hearty Buhari. In one photo, the President even looks so happy that he could become a meme for expressing joy.
But to what extent can that be interpreted to be that he is making enough progress to return to the country soon?

The Guardian’s story stated that the Governors left Abuja House without being walked to the door by the President. In the words of Oyedoyin and his co-writer, Segun Olaniyi, they left Buhari’s presence “looking morose”.

They refused to reply the questions put to them by the Guardian’s reporter.
It is not new to Nigerians to know that there is a good dose of choreography about meeting an ailing President, with the memories of the way Yar’Adua was handled in 2010 still fresh. The only difference is that, in the era of Change, we have become more skilled at doing it.
