The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is officially a year old today – May 29, 2016.
365 days ago, Buhari took over from Goodluck Jonathan as President, on a dawn when every Nigerian clung to the hope of change.
Riding on this crest of change, the government in the past year, has made relative stride in some key areas.
While some might argue that going by the expectations of Nigerians when they voted the current government in, the output so far from President Buhari is far from great, there are quite a number of achievements of his, to note.
Security
The President has been able to significantly decimate the terrorist sect, Boko Haram since taking over the helm of affairs.
On assumption of office, he moved the Nigerian Military Command Centre to Maiduguri and intensified the efforts of the military to defeat the insurgents.
According to the Nigerian Army, all Nigerian territories claimed by the terrorists have been reclaimed while 11,595 hostages have been rescued so far.
The government also introduced motorcycle battalion in the Nigerian Army so troops can access remote areas not accessible by trucks or cars.
A few months ago, the United States of America donated 24 mine-resistant armoured vehicles (MRAP) which has drastically reduced the number of casualties from the explosive mines planted by the terrorists.
Corruption
Since attaining office, President Muhammadu Buhari has focused on the debilitating scourge of corruption in the Nigerian system. He instituted an Advisory Committee on War Against Corruption with legal luminaries like Professor Itse Sagay on board.
Even as some former public office holders are being arrested for corruption, some looters of the polity of Nigeria have returned their alleged loot into the coffers of the country.
He also implemented the Treasury Single Account (TSA) which has provided greater visibility of government revenues and cash flows. Between June 2015 and April 2016, the Federal Government TSA collection clocked N3 trillion.
More transparency is now being shown in government agencies and ministries as thousands of ghost workers have been discovered by nationwide auditing of ministries.
President Buhari since getting into office has reached out to institutions like the World Bank and IMF, security agencies as well as other nations to locate and repatriate stolen funds.
Furthermore, in January, Nigeria and United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed Judicial Agreements on Extradition, Transfer of Sentenced Persons, Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal Matters which means that looters of public funds cannot hide themselves or assets in the UAE anymore.
In March 2016, the Federal Government and the Swiss Government signed a Letter of Intent On the Restitution of Illegally-Acquired Assets forfeited in Switzerland. Under the agreement, Switzerland will repatriate $321 million USD illicitly acquired by the Gen. Sani Abacha family.
Under President Buhari’s watch, the biggest scandal of the office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) was blown open. Following the auditing of the ONSA from 2011 to 2015, over N7 billion from indicted companies and individuals has been recovered.
Power
Not much has been visibly done by the government in the area of power supply.
Power generation has actually dipped in the last one year but according to reports from the Presidency, contracts and agreements that would upgrade and improve the power generating capacity of Nigeria have been signed with some countries like China and France.
Achievements my foot! Nigerians are suffering
