This should come in handy for later.
Doctors were able to save a factory worker’s hand after it was severed in an accident – by temporarily reattaching it to his ankle.
Doctors expect the young man to regain use of his hand after reattachment surgery.
Xiao Wei of Changde in China’s Hunan province had his right hand sliced at the wrist and his arm completely crushed in the machine accident last month.
Surgeons at Changsha Hospital attached the hand to his ankle to preserve it while they worked on the rest of his arm.
In a photo taken September 2013, 22-year-old Xiaolian displays the new nose doctors constructed on his forehead after he lost his original nose due to infection.
“His injury was severe. Besides ripping injuries, his arm was also flattened. We had to clear and treat his injuries before taking on the hand reattachment surgery,” his doctor explained to news media.
“I was just shocked and frozen at the spot, until co-workers unplugged the machine and retrieved my hand and took me to the hospital,” Wei told media after the surgery. “I am still young, and I couldn’t imagine life without a right hand.”
Doctors expect Wei will regain function of his hand following the reattachment surgery.
In another case from earlier this year, Chinese doctors reconstructed a new nose on a man’s forehead after he lost the original to an infection.
