FG incomplete documents delaying 2017 budget – Senate

Majority leader of the Senate, Ali Ndume has said the Federal Government should be blamed for the delay in the consideration of the 2017 budget instead of the Senate.

Ndume while speaking on the floor of the upper chamber on Thursday said the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) was incomplete.

However, Minister of Budget and Planning, Udoma Udoma had said the budget was being delayed by the Senate.

But Ndume while speaking said Udoma had continuously declined to appear before the lawmakers for further clarifications.

“The minister stated that the suspension of the debate of MTEF FSP had stopped the ministry’s budget to the senate,” Ndume said.

“We received MTEF on 30th September instead of it being submitted not later than the 1st September. We went through copies of MTEF and FSP, we spoke to some experts – MTEF and FSP document is empty and does not contain anything.”

Albert Bassey, a lawmaker from Akwa Ibom also said he called the minister after reading his comments in the media but he claimed he was misquoted.

“This has gone to incite the public against the national assembly. The minister is a senator and knows the workings of the national assembly,” he said.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki said, “This is very important which is why the leader brought it, it is not an issue of blame games.”
