GOP leaders crafting plans unfavourable to Trump

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) are crafting a move that will keep the government funded until December and raise the nation’s debt limit to encompass spending beyond the 2018 midterm elections without funding for the U.S.-Mexico border wall or coveted spending reforms of the conservatives.

The move will certainly not appease both the Trump base and conservatives. But the GOP leaders plans to sweeten the deal by adding billions of dollars for Hurricane Harvey relief.

Incorporating Hurricane Harvey relief into the move would draw the necessary support needed to pass the bill.

Senate Majority Whip John cornyn (R-Texas) said yesterday that “the upper chamber will seek to attach legislation raising the debt limit to a Hurricane Harvey relief bill scheduled for approval in the House today.

However, Senate leaders are of the optimism that President Trump despite not getting his border wall funded as anticipated will opt to sign the bill into law rather than risk a government shutdown or a credit crisis that could imperil the government’s ability to pay its bills.

While others aren’t convinced Trump will embrace the bill, Majority Leader, speaking to colleagues in the Senate said, “These are the president’s immediate priorities: pass disaster relief, prevent a default, fund the government. They are my immediate priorities as well”.

“We have to get all three of these things done, and we have to do it very quickly,” McConnell added.

Meanwhile, the President of a conservative group “For America” David Bozell said, “I hope the president tells Congress if that kind of package is on the table they should stuff it”.

The skepticism behind the move was borne out of Trump’s threat to shut down the government over border wall funding at a rally in Phoenix last month.

The President has not given a public comment on the Congressional GOP’s plan.
