House leaders scheduled to meet on DACA

House Speaker Paul Ryan is scheduled to meet with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats on Wednesday to discuss alternative legislative options to the DACA phase out to avoid the deportation of the young beneficiaries of the program in line with President Donald Trump’s request, Politico reports.

Also drafted to attend the meeting are: Leaders of the Congressional Tri-Caucus, Chairwoman Michelle Lujan Grisham of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Chairman Cedric Richmond of the Congressional Black Caucus and Chairwoman Judy Chu of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

Others are: House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Minority Whip Steny Hoyer. The gathering which was upon the request of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is scheduled for 5 p.m. in the speaker’s office.

Ryan’s spokeswoman, Ashlee Strong wrote in an email, “The speaker has said he wants Congress to address DACA as the president has called for, but he has not endorsed any one measure and has said border security will need to a part of the solution”.

The meeting became expedient due to increasing pressure from the public on Congress to fix the program and protect the “Dreamers” whom many believe are innocent and are already Americans from deportation after Trump announced the rescinding of the program last week.

Meanwhile, top Democrats have expressed unwillingness to work on a speculated move by the administration and some Republicans to tie the border wall funding with the DACA bill. The White House has however rebuffed such claims.
