[The Injustice Blog] What’s the state of Government rehabs in Nigeria?

Government

Nigeria has a drug problem so profound, even our often obtuse leaders, like the Sultan of Sokoto has come out to condemn the scourge and ask that victims of the epidemic be found and reformed. Reforming these victims of drug abuse and other individuals addicted to drugs has to be taken seriously, otherwise we will never get the result we need. First we have to stop treating drug addiction as some sort of spiritual affliction.  Rather we need a physical and psychological approach which can only come to being through the rehabilitation of  drug users.

However, it’s worthy of mentioning that apart from the few psychiatric hospitals we have in the country, the government hasn’t put in place enough facilities to reform, redeem and reposition drug abuse victims to reintegrate into the larger society. Quick research done by this writer shows that majority of drug rehabilitation centres in the country is owned by private firms, with the costs of rehabilitating drug users falling solely on the shoulders of their immediate and extended families.

In countries like South Africa , India, United Kingdom among others, their government has invested enormous resources in building rehab centres for drug abuse victims among others so that they can be reformed, redeemed and repositioned for their new life in the society. The Federal government hasn’t done much in that aspect and its highly Important we have it to save the future of these young Nigerians attached to drug abuse.

The psychiatric hospitals we have in the country too should be upgraded to world standards so as to meet the growing  needs of the society and for efficient service delivery. Private individuals in the country through their numerous foundations have done enough by building rehabilitation centres to reform drug abuse victims.

Government at all levels are enjoined to join the war against drug abuse by building rehabs to reform drug abuse victims in Nigeria.
