Bayelsa seems to be in the news today for a number of reasons – first a former governor says President Jonathan will struggle to get a quarter of the votes from his state, and secondly, the present governor says women are the breadwinners in Bayelsa.
The Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, has made a shocking revelation that 90 per cent of women in the state are saddled with the responsibility of catering for their families.
Dickson said this on Sunday, February 1, through his media aide, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, during the establishment of the Women Development Centre as well as the reconstitution of the board for the Youth Development Centre dedicated to their empowerment.
While inaugurating the Directors-General and members of the WDC and the YDC, Dickson said the responsibilities of the boards included the mobilisation and development of youths towards contributing their quota to the society.
He said: “Our government thumbs up for the hardworking women of the state. About 90 per cent of them are breadwinners of their families. We will support them in their role in nurturing the society.”
