“Maleficent 2” is definitely happening and Chiwetel Ejiofor is in talks to star in the sequel

Maleficent

After starring in 2016’s Doctor Strange, it seems Chiwetel Ejiofor is becoming comfortably entrenched within the Disney family. Last year, news circulated about the Oscar nominee playing the villainous Scar in Disney’s upcoming live-action reboot of The Lion King. Currently, Ejiofor is in discussions to appear in the live-action fantasy sequel Maleficent 2.

According to reports, Ejiofor’s role will be a potential romantic foil for Angelina Jolie’s titular character and if confirmed, it will see the actor join other new cast members: Michele Pfeiffer and Ed Skrein.

The sequel will be helmed by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Joachim Ronning, and Ejiofor would be the latest headline-worthy addition to the Disney blockbuster. First released in 2014 and directed by Robert Stromberg, I was one of those who thought Maleficent 2 won’t happen. Angelina Jolie’s clinically, well-applied red lipstick, and her facial contouring and costumes were marvellous. She flew with heavy feathered wings and squashed adversaries. On the whole, though, I didn’t quite feel the film’s magic.

Perhaps Ejiofor, based on his potential role, can add some interesting depth. Disney is yet to settle on a firm release date for Maleficent 2, but we’ll be bringing you all the latest on Joachim Ronning’s fantastical sequel as it begins to take shape.
