“Men’s Corner” tackled sex toys in its latest episode and we have questions

Men's Corner

Last night’s episode of Men’s Corner was decidedly sleazy. The words “erection”, “butt plug”, and “nut” tonally enriched the conversation on sex toys, but the topic itself on a show like Men’s Corner was unsurprisingly going to be underutilised. Mazino, Andre Blaze, and Ebuka Obi-Uchendu navigated the episode through their initial self-censoring and, as usual, enlisted external perspectives.

To be clear, the topic didn’t occur in a vacuum. Rooted in the benignly shocking news about the sales of sex dolls some months ago, and the wildly reported story of a man who brought his sex doll as a date to a mall, the episode is therefore packed with resonance. But it hit a few bumps, and I made observations.

Why was Andre horrified at the thought of men using a Fleshlight?

For those who aren’t enlightened, the Fleshlight is a cylindrical-shaped sex toy with an artificial vagina or anal opening. It’s quite a popular masturbatory aid, which works by inserting the penis into its opening. On the show, the Fleshlight was brought up by Ebuka, who describes its usage with humorous restraint. “It comes with its own juice.” And then Andre interjects in the lines of, “how would you feel cleaning it up?” The question stems from the event of post-ejaculation. On the surface, it seemed like a well-timed wisecrack. But there was a layer of disgust colouring Andre’s views, and felt borderline irrational, considering a ‘mens’ show has to cover our favourite past time, sexual activity.

The butt plug and the elephant in the room

In my introductory paragraph, I had used the word “underutilised” to describe how the episode doesn’t do justice to the topic. The small uneasiness I felt when Mazino introduced butt plugs into the conversation was hinged on one thing: would the hosts be able to offer balanced, nuanced comments on a sex toy that has long been regarded with homosexual connotations?

Short is, they didn’t. It’s true that some straight men will not stick anything up their butt, but that’s just a horrid mix of sexual illiteracy and a lacuna in the knowledge of their own bodies but it is fairly common knowledge that a good number of men have become quite comfortable with the idea of anal stimulation, especially in heterosexual relationships. Perhaps addressing, and also stripping away the loaded associations with butt plugs could have paved way for a universally enlightening discourse.

Ebuka must be having amazing sex, or amazing self-help sex

I present my evidence: He knows a Nigerian woman who is a sex toy dealer, shipping these bedroom accessories from overseas in bulks and gets highly patronised. Am I to believe Ebuka hasn’t ordered for himself something kinky? Moreover, at every point on the episode, he seemed agreeable to the incorporation of sex toys in the bedroom, and he’s the only one quite likely to have a sex dungeon a lá Fifty Shades’ Jamie Dornan.

Unlike Ebuka, Mazino gives me the feeling that he’s prudishly only into missionary, and Andre is sexually literate enough that he suffers from a clinical disorder to be perfect in bed. Aside, bringing up the Fleshlight, Ebuka also briefly hinted at threesomes as another alternative to spicing up monogamous sex. We’ll never know if Ebuka is currently practising this, but merely mentioning it amps up his coolness.
