Michel Platini forced to bow out as UEFA president

Michel Platini has been compelled to resign from his UEFA presidential post after the Court of Arbitration for Sport refused to overturn his ban from football activity.

The Frenchman had his ban – which was a result of his involvement in a $2 million (£1.3m) fraud case – reduced from six years to four by the court.

In addition, his fine was reduced from €70,000 to €55,000.

Platini, who still maintains his innocence, in a statement released by his lawyers stated he was “deeply disappointed” by the “injustice” of the decision and is now ready to resign.

A statement from his lawyers read: “Michel Platini announces that he will resign as president of UEFA at the organisation’s next congress,”
