Nigeria Paralympics team, Hillary Clinton, Patience Jonathan | The winners and losers

Team Nigeria has made the country proud with their outstanding performance at the ongoing 2016 Paralympics Games in Rio.

So far, the team has won a total of 7 medals and the games are not even over yet.

In related events, Sports minister, Solomon Dalung has yet again pulled a string of hatred in Nigerians after he said in a radio interview that all athletes need to win is ‘a winning mentality’.

On the international front, presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton has received backlash for not disclosing full details of her health predicaments. Her campaign may have suffered a setback for this slight glitch and opponent, Donald Trump seems to be having a field day.

Back in Nigeria, former First Lady, Patience Jonathan has been accused of misappropriation of cash and an incredibly large amount at that.

From Nigeria’s Paralympics team to Solomon Dalung to Hillary and Patience, here are the winners and losers from the past week:

WINNERS

Nigerian Paralympics Team: The Rio 2016 Paralympics Games kicked off on 7TH of September and Team Nigeria has had a remarkable outing so far.

With 7 gold medals and securing 9th place on the overall medals table behind China, Great Britain, USA and Brazil, the team is flying Nigeria’s flag high after our appalling performance at the Olympics in August. The first gold medal was won by Roland Ezuruike for the 54kg power-lifting event.

Paul Kehinde equally lifted 218kg to win another gold in the same event. Flora Ugwunwa set a world record in women’s javelin after a throw of 20.25 metres.

The Paralympics team has a history of brilliant outings at world events, though they do not get the deserved attention and accolades from the Nigerian government.

Donald Trump: Following his opponents health failure last week, Republican nominee, Donald Trump is now ahead of Hillary Clinton in two states, Florida and Ohio, according to a poll.

Florida is a defining state in the elections as it has a large number of representatives and greater voting power. The elections will hold in a few weeks and these are very crucial moments for the candidates so Go Trump!

LOSERS

Patience Jonathan: There has been a tug of war between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a money laundering case, a sum of $5 million was found in a Skye Bank account that belongs to the former First Lady. Also, another sum of $15 million was found in four separate company accounts that have been traced to Mrs. Jonathan.

She claimed ownership of the cash when she said she gave millions of dollars to the former Special Adviser to the President on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa to open accounts for her.

Four company domiciliary accounts were opened and from investigation, the accounts were opened in the names of Dufada’s domestic servants who were oblivious to the act.

In a recent development, Patience Jonathan has admitted that the total sum of $31.4 million found in these accounts was set aside to cover her medical bills. Just when the Jonathans thought they had moved on in peace, all of this is coming out and we’re watching to see where it leads.

Hillary Clinton: The Democratic candidate for the U.S. Presidential elections, Hillary Clinton suffered a bit of a setback in her campaign programmes following a bout of pneumonia at the 9/11 memorial on Sunday morning.

Clinton stumbled and was held by three men to her vehicle. She had to cancel campaign events and an appearance on Ellen Degeneres show as a result of her ill health. This comes after Donald Trump’s claims that Clinton is not physically and mental fit to rule America.

Solomon Dalung: The sports minister is not new to our losers list. This time, in an interview on sports radio, Brila FM, Dalung said, “The disabled athletes have shown that all you need is a winning mentality and not too much preparation, they trained under the same condition with their able bodied counterparts but they are winning medals now.”

The minister’s unintelligent comment has caught a lot of flak from Nigerians and the Sports minister is under fire yet again.
