Following the deaths of some job seekers during the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise conducted last Saturday, the executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Ben Angwe, has said that the families of the victims would be compensated.

Professor Angwe said this in response to a petition submitted against the Federal Government by a human rights advocacy group, Citizens Advocacy for Social & Economic Rights (CASER).

He also added that a thorough investigation into Saturday’s tragic events would be carried out by the NHRC.

Angwe said further that the NIS tragedy would serve as a deterrent to the occurrence of any such incidents in the future as adequate precautions would be put in place to avoid this.

The executive director of CASER, Frank Tietie, while submitting the petition, demanded the suspension of the minister of interior, Mr Abba Moro, and the comptroller-general of the NIS, Mr David Parradang to ensure a hitch-free investigation into the tragedy.
