Meet Omran Daqneesh, the 5-year-old boy who became a symbol of Syria’s misery

The photos and video of a 5-year-old Syrian boy, Omran Daqneesh has gone viral on the internet after he survived an aerial attack in the capital city of Aleppo this week.

Omran was one of the children being treated after a building collapsed in Aleppo due to airstrikes on the city.

But he was different, Omran’s photos strike a nerve as the little boy looked shocked and petrified.

Covered in dust and smears of blood on his face, Omran, according to many depicts the true mood of Syria.

The video shows two other children brought to the ambulance, and then two adults, who were taken to a hospital already swamped with casualties.

Mohammad al-Ahmad, a radiology nurse, was in the emergency room when Omran arrived around 9 p.m. with bruises and cuts all over his body.

“The boy was traumatized.”

“He wasn’t speaking when he arrived. A few minutes later, he started crying from pain,” Ahmad said.

Doctors say there are no signs of brain damage and that his parents had survived but their home was destroyed.

Within some moments, his pictures already circulated around the internet, with commentators using them to create memes seeking help for Syria.

In one of the pictures, Omran is depicted as a true representative of Syrian people.

In another, cartooned pictures of Omran and Alan, a Syrian toddler who drowned when his family was trying to flee Syria were placed together.

Recall that a Syrian toddler, Alan Kurdi had drowned and his body washed to the shore of a Turkish beach last September. His family was trying to reach Europe on a smuggler’s boat.
