R.Kelly’s alleged sexual misconducts – a timeline

R&B legend, R.Kelly was recently accused of holding girls “against their will” in what they call “an abusive cult”.

Parents of the girls say R.Kelly holds the girls in promise of giving them a boost in their musical career then “brainwashes” them as he controls every aspect of their lives and ensures they don’t return home.

One of the girls, Joycelyn Savage in a video blasted her parents, stating that she was not being held against her will.

However, this is not the first time Kelly would be accused of sexual abuse related activities.

Here’s a timeline of different times the singer was accused of sexual misconduct.

1995: R.Kelly was accused of getting married to R&B singer, Aaliyah at the age of 14, a year after she recorded her first album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number.”

As the rumours continued, Vibe published a marriage certificate between the two filed in 1995, in Illinois, where Aaliyah’s age was falsified as 18.

Kelly, who was in his late 20s was her primary songwriter. Both singers, however, did not publicly admit to the marriage.

Writer, Jim DeRogatis obtained a document in 2000, showing that Aaliyah and her family obtained an annulment of the marriage from a Michigan judge.

1996: A Chicago woman, Tiffany Hawkins filed a lawsuit against Kellywhere she claimed to have had a four-year sexual relationship with the singer that began in 1991, when she was 15.

According to the story, Kelly met Hawkins and at least one other teenaged girl with whom he allegedly had sex while he was visiting a choir class at Kenwood Academy in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighbourhood, where he’d attended school years before.

Hawkins and Kelly reportedly settled the suit out of court for $250,000.

January 2001: A videotape purportedly showing Kelly having sex with an underage woman was sent to Sun-Times.

The Chicago Police Department investigated its contents but was unable to verify the age or identity of the woman.

August 2001: A former intern at Epic Records, Tracy Sampson filed a lawsuit alleging that Kelly encouraged her “into an indecent sexual relationship” in 2000, when she was 17 years old.

“I was coerced into receiving oral sex from a girl I did not want to have sex with,” she claimed in the suit.

“I was often treated as his personal sex object and cast aside. He would tell me to come to his studio and have sex with him, then tell me to go. He often tried to control every aspect of my life including who I would see and where I would go.”

The suit was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount, the New York Post reported the following year.

February 2002: Another tape from an unknown source which showed Kelly having sex with an underaged girl was made available to the police by Sun Times.

The girl was 17 years old at the time the video was leaked and was identified by her aunt. The aunt believed the girl to be 14 at the time the tape was recorded.

However, both the girl and her parents denied any sexual activity with Kelly.

April – May 2002: Two women, Patrice Jones and Montina Woods filed sexual misconduct suit against the singer.

Patrice Jones, claimed that Kelly pressured her into a sexual relationship in the late ’90s, when she was 16 years old.

Jones alleged that Kelly promised to help her become a musician.

She also claimed that Kelly impregnated her and coerced her to have an abortion.

In May, Montina Woods alleged that Kelly recorded them having sex without her knowledge.

She stated that it was in R. Kelly’s sex tape compilation that was sold by bootleggers.

Kelly settled with both women out of court.

June 2002: The R&B singer was arrested for child porn for his second sex tape and was charged with 21 counts of manufacturing child pornography.

He was charged with 12 more counts in Florida where he was arrested. The new charges were as a result of photos of him having sex with an underaged girl.

The Florida charges were later ruled out for being obtained illegally without a search warrant. Seven of the Chicago charges were also eventually dropped.

Days later, Kelly posted bail for the Chicago charges.

June 2008: Kelly finally went on trial after years of delay. An expert said the tape was not forged or tampered with, while fourteen witnesses identified Kelly as the man.

The jury, however, found him not guilty of the remaining charges.

According to WBEZ, the jurors said that they believed Kelly was the man on the tape, but could not be certain about the identity of the woman.

2016: R.Kelly was photographed with 19-year-old Halle Calhoun at a party.

The picture led to controversies on social media, due to Kelly’s history as an alleged sexual predator.

July 17, 2017: A Buzzfeed News claims that parents have accused R&B superstar, R.Kelly of holding their daughters “against their will” in what they call “an abusive cult”.

The parents say R.Kelly holds the girls in promise of giving them a boost in their musical career then “brainwashes” them as he controls every aspect of their lives and ensures they don’t return home.

July 18, 2017: Joycelyn Savage, one of the ladies allegedly being held by RnB singer, R.Kelly in a “sex cult” said she is “fine and happy”.

While speaking with TMZ, Joycelyn said she was not being held against her will and was happy.

She said, “I just want everybody to know – my parents and everybody in the world – that I’m totally fine, I’m happy where I’m at, and everything is OK with me”.
