The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a resolution asking the federal government to as a matter of urgency fast-track the finding of the more than 200 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram one year ago.

Prompted by a motion of urgent national importance moved by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the House asked the government and the military to speed up the release of the girls.

Prior to ruling on the matter, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal added that everything must be done to recover the girls. “It is very sad that they are still being held till date,” Tambuwal said.

He expressed worry that although the armed forces, gave indication that they knew where the girls were, but they were unable to bring them back.

According to Tambuwal “This issue is very emotional and dear to our heart. As a nation we must do everything possible to recover these girls. It is very unfortunate that we got to this level. As a govt we must recover these girls. It is very sad, it is very touching.”

Daribi-Erewa observed that: “it is exactly one year since Boko Haram terrorists stormed the premises of GSS Chibok in Borno State and took away almost 300 students who were preparing to write their school certificate final examinations.

“It is unfortunate that the innocent girls were captured virtually unchallenged and government was unresponsive for over two weeks and one year on, it deeply hurts that no concrete information is available as to the whereabouts of our missing girls from Chibok.

“While commending our military for achieving a reasonable degree of success in fighting in the lead debate told her colleagues at plenary that it was imperative for the federal government under President Jonathan to do everything possible to find the abducted girls, dead or alive,” she said.
