#SaveBornoIDPs campaign kicks off on Twitter – here’s what you should know

SDGs Nigeria Action Group via its Twitter account, @SDGsNGA is calling on all Nigerians to come to the aid of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in and out of camps spread across the North East region of Nigeria.

The Twitter campaign aims to gather monetary resources for the victims of the humanitarian crisis that has hit the region. The conversation officially kicked off on Twitter at 7pm and the donation lines were open simultaneously.

As of now, over N200,000 has been raised and donations are still trickling in. The campaign is expected to last for a week.

It would be recalled that the United Nations warned last week that Nigeria is on the brink of a famine owing to the number of refugees fleeing into IDP camps. According to the UN, almost a quarter of a million children in Nigeria’s North-East are malnourished. Fears were raised that 49,000 children and pregnant women may die before the end of 2016 if no urgent remedial measure are taken.

The #SaveBornoIDPs campaign was created to garner local and international awareness and aid. This is not the first of its type since the IDP situation began but the #SaveBornoIDPs is getting fairly impressive engagement on social media.
