[The Injustice Blog] Examining Operation Python Dance II as an act of provocation

The Nigerian Army on Sunday, September 10, 2017 launched a military operation in South Eastern states – Codenamed, Operation Python Dance II.

Which, according to them, aims to bring an end to prevailing security problems, especially kidnapping, in the region.

This statement laced with suspicion, is coming at a time the federal government, through the office of the attorney general of the federation approached justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High court in Abuja on August 1, 2017 seeking the revocation of Nnamdi Kanu’s bail.

This suspicion was confirmed on September 10, 2017, when soldiers of the Nigerian Army allegedly attacked the home of the IPOB leader; where some were injured.

The Nigerian Army has, however, denied the news of the attack.

A statement signed by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, Abia, Major Oyegoke Gbadamosi reads, “This is far from the truth. Rather, it was a group of suspected IPOB militants that blocked the road against troops of 145 Battalion while on show of force along FMC-World Bank Road in Umuahia town, Abia State at about 6.00-6.30 pm, today.

We are not concerned about the Nigerian Army and its dance, it’s about the government. The federal government, in recent times, has embarked on provocative acts in the Southeast where the Biafra agitation reign Supreme.

Dialogue, which should be the means of engagement by the government has been abandoned in preference of force. At the moment, the federal government is battling the dreaded Boko Haram sect and the scourge posed by the Fulani herdsmen. It will be unthinkable of the government to ignite another crisis in the southeast.

The Python Dance II is provocative and daring to IPOB. The group since inception has killed no one, nor fired a bullet.

The group on the May 30, 2017, declared a sit at home protest which was obeyed across the five south eastern states without bloodshed!

Why not dialogue with them instead of force? Operation Python Dance II should stop forthwith as the country cannot afford to jump from its current frying pan of Boko-Haram and Fulani herdsmen to another fire in the Southeast.
