[The Injustice Blog] Ignorance would not end the killings in Lagos island, this would

The recurrent clash on Lagos island, that has been a part of the area for years is taking a dramatic turn at the moment as the number of casualties is on increase.

Rival gangs have killed each other over the past few days.At the moment, the residents of Onala has lost three people to the clash while their neighbours in oke-popo have lost eleven souls.

Despite the fact that these attacks have been an age long issue in the area, there is always a solution to every problem. To start with, traditional institutions must be ready to deal with issues of social disturbance in their domain.Lagos Island has a rich traditional institution and probably the most organised traditional system in Lagos with each family having their “Iga” (Iga means palace).

The Number of “Iga” in Lagos Island is in excess of twenty and it’s led by Oba of Lagos who presides from his enclave in ‘Iga-Idunganran”. As a result, the traditional system in Lagos island is in a better position to solve this issue once and for all. They are close to the people and those formenting troubles are from their respective domains which makes it easy to identify the culprit for onward punishment.

The practice where traditional rulers allegedly give covering and protection to those formenting trouble in their domain should be discouraged as the problem might end up consuming them someday.

Also, our collapsed societal family system must be rejigged as these unending clashes are evident of that. Majority of those involved in this clash according to findings are youths within age (17-30) that should be doing something productive with their lives.

Some of them are not with their parents and those with the parents have grown beyond parental control as they’ve turned to societal nuisance causing havoc all around. The family system in our society must be reawakened.Families must teach their children the good virtues that will make them a better person in the society.

Moving forward, security agencies must step up action in their bid to solve this crisis once and for all as they only make arrests without prosecution. It has reached a level where some major suspects in the killings have assumed the status of a demi-god in Lagos Island.

They have been arrested and released on several occasions without prosecuting them for their crime against humanity. As a result, they are emboldened to commit more of these crimes and get away with it.The moment they are made to face the wrath of the law, it will serve as a deterrent to others.
