The Late 5: Buhari addresses world leaders at the 72nd #UNGA; Students react to suspension of ASUU strike; and other top stories

Good evening.

Here are the top 5 stories that drove conversation today:

President Muhamadu Buhari Tuesday addressed world leaders at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly.

Delivering his speech, Buhari thanked the international community for its efforts in taming Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region, while urging the UN Security Council to take every necessary step to speak with North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un on his accelerated nuclear programme.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, in a Facebook post on Tuesday, told the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to stop peddling propaganda. He was referring to a press conference where the minister allegedly “insinuated” the opposition is sponsoring the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“If the government in which Lai Mohammed serves, knows which opposition members are sponsoring IPOB, then they should identify them, arrest them and then prosecute them,” he said, “… the time for propaganda is gone.”

Lai Mohammed, however, reiterated on live TV today that the Federal Government is aware of the sources of funding of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) but he was “not at liberty to disclose them.”

“Terrorists do not publish where their funding are coming from. But we know the countries that are supporting IPOB,” he said. “We are taking steps to block them and we are also taking a lot of diplomatic actions in respect of the countries that are supporting them.”

Four people were reported dead after an explosion rocked the Petroleum Wharf in Apapa, Lagos.

The explosion occurred around 3 AM Tuesday, according to eyewitnesses, when “some hoodlums attacked a vessel, identified as Histria Ivory, discharging Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to scoop fuel spilling from the vessel.”

The NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru, described the occurrence as “unfortunate.” He also said in a statement that the NNPC still had more than 1.6bn litres of Premium Motor Spirit, enough to last for 48 days.
