Borno dam collapse leaves thousands displaced as 70% of Maiduguri is flooded
Tuesday 10, September was a tragic day for Nigerians living in Maiduguri as the Borno dam collapse led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents as 70% of Maiduguri suffered the flooding.
Humans and animals felt the impact of the flood as inmates organised a jailbreak, and 80% of animals in Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo perished.
With 70% of Maiduguri submerged under water, the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, has called for the swift evacuation of the residents and survivors of the flood.
Student enrollment in Canada is reduced by 45%
Canadian universities have shared their worries about the low enrollment of students worldwide, rounding the figure up to a 45% decline in registration following the recent stringent rules on the country’s student visa.
Canada has experienced protests from international students who complained about the country planning to deport them due to immigration policies.
Earlier this year, the immigration Minister, Marc Miller, announced the harsh laws concerning immigration to curb the depleting housing, healthcare and other services caused by the influx of immigrants and hoped the new rules would reduce 35% of students in the country for the next two years.
Southwest Governors vote ₦266 billion on airport construction
Both former and incumbent governors in the Southwest have all voted for the use of ₦266 billion in the construction of airports despite the detrimental state of the existing ones.
Although the governors have voted on the funds required for airport construction, experts have reasons to believe that the project may not be successful or profitable.
There are currently eight airports in the six Southwest states (Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun) and not all are half as profitable as the one in Lagos State as only four out of 30 airports in Nigeria are statistically successful.
Lagos Red Line train is predicted to transport 150,000 passengers daily
The Lagos State Government has predicted the Lagos Red Line train will transport about 100,000 to 150,000 passengers daily when it becomes public.
Olawale Musa, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, stated that the Red Line train can transport 800 people in a trip, and it is currently ongoing a test run before it is officially put out for the use of all Lagosians.
“We are consolidating what was already on the ground. If you look around Lagos, you will see that there is a lot of improvement, such as the expansion of roads and junction improvement, among others. This is mainly to ensure that traffic congestion becomes a thing of the past,” he said.
Insurgents and families were affected by the Borno flood
Reports have revealed that insurgents and families were not safe from the collapse of the Alau Dam in Borno State, which claimed lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of people.
According to reports, insurgents and families living in the infamous Sambisa Forest were affected as some of the Boko Haram members are predicted to have lost their lives to the flood.
