Vandals remove 132kV transmission line, leaving 60% of Abuja in darkness

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that vandals caused 60% of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to lose power yesterday, Friday, January 17.

According to the TCN, the vandals’ removal of the 132kV transmission line and underground cables supplying electricity to the Central Area and its environs left most of Abuja in darkness, including the Minister of Power’s office.

Chinese envoy charges West Africa to shun external intervention

Ambassador Yu Dunhai, the Chinese envoy to Nigeria has asked that West Africans should resist all external interference in its growth and development.

Yu Dunhai addressed an exchange program involving students from Tsinghua University in China and the University of Abuja, focusing on “Civilizational Exchange and Mutual Learning between China and Nigeria,” which took place in Abuja.

“I looked at the security situation now in West Africa. I know that many people are very much concerned. But one principle I believe that is fundamental is that we should object to any foreign interference in the region. But particularly by any major powers. I think, you know, for civilisation, exchange, and mutual learning, there are two principles that we need to follow. Because it’s imperative,” he said.

EFCC officer shot dead in a shootout with alleged internet fraudsters in Anambra

An officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been pronounced dead in a shootout against what would have been alleged internet fraudsters, often called “Yahoo Boys”, in a raid.

According to reports, the officers were on a secret mission to uncover the hideout of the cyber criminals in Anambra but did not expect to find a married man with a licensed firearm in his home when they broke into his house.

One of the anti-graft agency’s officers was shot dead and two others have sustained fatal injuries and are being hospitalised.

The man had shot at the EFCC operatives believing they were thieves who came to rob his home at midnight. The man has since been arrested as the EFCC officials called for backup.

The officers claimed that they do not have life insurance as the last time any of them died during a raid was under Farida Waziri and upon the recent death of the officer, his family would receive nothing.
