Top U.S Republican Steve Scalise’s condition worsens

MedStar Washington Hospital has said that top U.S. Representative Steve Scalise, who was shot and wounded during a baseball practice in Virginia last month, has developed an infection and was readmitted to the intensive care unit on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

The No.3 Republican leader in the House of Representatives had been improving in the past weeks following multiple surgeries to repair internal organs and fix broken bones. The hospital has downgraded his condition to “serious” from “fair,” and would provide another update on Thursday.

Scalise and other Republican lawmakers were shot while they practiced for a charity baseball game, June 14 and Scalise was shot in the hip.

The gunman who was identified as James Hodgkinson had a history of posting hate messages against Republican President Donald Trump online from information on his Facebook page. He died at the scene of the shooting.
