Trump to nominate Texas lawyer as FEC commissioner

In the latest spree of appointments, The White House late Tuesday announced that President Trump intends to nominate James Trainor III of Texas to be a commissioner of the Federal Election Commission to complete a 6-year term, which spans to April 2021. His official nomination will be succeeded with a Senate consideration, the Washington Examiner reports.

The FEC which operates as an independent regulatory agency is saddled with overseeing campaign finance of federal elections.

Trainor, a former special assistant to the defense Secretary, James Mattis, previously served as counsel for Donald J. Trump for President, Inc. and the Republican National Committee, and also represented former Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s presidential campaign in 2012.

He is a partner at Akerman LLP where he has practiced election law, campaign finance, and ethics representation for government officers, interest groups, and corporations, from where he also coordinated the Trump and Rick Perry’s presidential campaign.

Trainor if confirmed will work alongside Steven Walther (an independent), chairman of the FEC, Caroline Hunter, the vice chair, three additional commissioners, Lee Goodman and Matthew Pearl who are both Republicans and one Democrat, Ellen Weintraub.
