President Trump’s nominee for director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Christopher A. Wray, testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Fox News reports.
The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing began with an approximately 10-minutes opening statement from Sen. Chuck Grassley, the committee chairman, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the committee’s ranking member, and then with a statement from former Georgia Sen. Sam Nunn and the introductory statement from Christopher Wray.
A round of questions will follow from committee members, who will have ten minutes each. More rounds of questions could be possible. Questions about the Russia investigation are likely to come up during this hearing, along with the latest development of emails that appear to show the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., accepting help from Russia who offered incriminating information about Hillary Clinton.
Sen. Grassley called the hearing to order and made this statement;
“Today, the Committee is considering the nomination of Christopher Wray to be the 8th director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Wray, congratulations to you on your nomination. This is an important day for you, your family, and for the country and I welcome you and your family to the Committee. The Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is charged with running a vast agency with tremendous power.
“This power, if used inappropriately, could threaten the civil liberties of every American. However, when used appropriately, and subject to rigorous oversight by Congress, it protects the nation from terrorists, spies and hardened criminals. The Attorney General is commonly referred to as the top law enforcement officer in the country. The FBI Director serves the Attorney General as the Top Cop on the street. It’s a demanding job that requires a keen understanding of the law, sound management skills, calmness under significant pressure, and a level head.”
