Sharmeka Moffitt had social media all abuzz after telling police that she was set on fire while walking on a trail in Winnsboro,La. It was originally reported on social media that Moffitt was attacked by racists who wrote KKK on her car, all because she wore an Obama t-shirt. Later, however, evidence from the crime scene revealed that Moffitt was lying, and now she faces serious time in jail.
Local affiliate KSLA reveals that Moffitt could face up to 25 years in jail if she is convicted during her December 2013 trial. Moffitt, who initially said she was attacked by white men in hoodies, suffered burns on the majority of her body and was treated at a local burn center.
Moffitt’s case made national news, even prompting the NAACP to call for an investigation. After the investigation, Winnsboro Police Chief Lester Thomas revealed that evidence gathered at the scene of the incident showed that 20-year-old Sharmeka Moffitt’s initial claims that she was attacked and set on fire were fabricated.
“This is a case in which the investigators had to pursue the facts that were presented,” Thomas said. “It’s been a very disturbing case for everyone involved.”
“There is more physical evidence along those lines that back this up,” Thomas said.
In addition, a racial slur and the letters, KKK, that were written on Moffitt’s vehicle, were linked to female DNA, according to police.
Even though Moffit could do serious time in prison, she could also be let off with probation because this is her first offense.
