Shi’ites, youth clashes in Kaduna, Katsina leave 12 dead

12 people have been confirmed dead and many injured in clashes between members of the Shi’ites group and youths in Katsina and Kaduna States.

The group had staged a procession to celebrate Ashura Day when the clash took place in the two states.

In Kaduan State, Funtua town, 10 people were killed in a bloody clash between youths and the Shi’ites.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Katsina Command, DSP Salisu Agasia, confirmed the incident but denied knowledge of any casualty.

“All I can tell you for now is that my commissioner is in Funtua, leading the operation and we are on top of the situation,” Agasia said.

In Kaduna, two Shi’ites members were killed in the Zango area of the state.

The Shi’ites members had assembled for a procession but were dispersed by the State security outfit, ‘Operation Yaki’.

After the security agents had left, Shi’ites members who felt the residents ganged up with the security agents against them started attacking residents.

“The youths mobilised against the Shi’ite group,” said an eyewitness, Nura Ibrahim.

The Police Public Relation Officer, Kaduna Command, Aliyu Usman, however denied any life was lost in the clash.
