Falana set to drag FG to court over $3.5 loan

Coming on the heels of the recent letter he wrote to the federal government against obtaining external loan to the tune of $3.5 billion, senior lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana, on Sunday, threatened to initiate a legal suit against the government.

In his earlier letter, dated February 5, Falana had urged the Nigerian ministry of Finance to abandon its plan of obtaining a loan from the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

He urged the government to instead try to recover stolen, misappropriated funds, taxes and debts, and use them to fund the 2016 budget.

“From the information at our disposal, the federal government is owed not less than $66.5 billion (about N13.3 trillion) which ought to be recovered without any further delay,” Falana had said in his letter.

In a statement released on Sunday, the foremost lawyer stated that he was yet to receive a response from the finance ministry.

The statement reads in part:

“Since you have not deemed it fit to react to the serious issues raised in the letter, kindly be informed that we shall commence legal proceedings not later than February 29, 2015, with a view to compelling the Federal Government to recover the said loans, royalties, levies, and other recoverable revenues of not less than $66.5 billion.”
